Celebrating Ten Years of Labyrinth Walks on Maui

Ten years ago, Rev. Heather Mueller-Fitch of St. John's Church in Keokea had a labyrinth painted in the parking lot. She had a vision of providing people with a place to experience God, to listen in silence and to walk a path of prayer. A few months later, Eve Hogan joined her in her mission and began offering full moon labyrinth walks every month starting in Dec. 1996. Since then, labyrinths have been built in back yards, on beaches, at churches, from Kapalua to Lahaina to Makawao to Keokea and labyrinth walks and presentations have been offered at hotels, schools, churches, birthday parties, Life Fest, and public events.

Directions to some of Maui's labyrinths:

The Sacred Garden of Maliko: 460 Kaluanui Rd, Makawao.
From Kahului, take the Haleakala Hwy and go up four and a half miles (Watch for the number 4 mile marker on the side of the road.)
Turn left on Haliimaile Rd. (The first place there is a left hand turn lane.)
Take Haliimaile all the way to the end, to the stop sign.
Turn right on Baldwin Rd. and go a quarter mile up.
Turn left on Kaluanui Rd. Follow Kaluanui 1 mile; go over the little bridge, where the road turns to the right into Maliko Gulch. Continue to where the road goes into a hairpin turn. You will see The Sacred Garden on the right.

From Makawao: Go down Baldwin 2 miles. Just past the Hui, turn right on Kaluanui Rd. Follow Kaluanui 1 mile; go over the little bridge, where the road turns to the right into Maliko Gulch. Continue to where the road goes into a hairpin turn. You will see The Sacred Garden on the right.

St. John's Labyrinth in Keokea: Take Haleakala Hwy (#37) past Kula. The church is located between the 16 and 17 mile markers on the right hand side.

Kapalua Labyrinth:
Take Hwy 30 north past Lahaina toward Kapalua. Turn left onto Ritz Calton Way. Take it all the way to the bottom, past the Ritz entrance, where you will see the small Ritz Carlton Chapel on the right. Turn right into the little parking lot. It is easiest if you walk up toward the chapel, then cross the bridge toward the ocean that will take you on a golf course path toward the bottom of the hill. When you reach the bottom, you'll have to walk across a small stretch of golf course toward the stand of ironwood trees. The labyrinth is on the other side of the trees, near the ocean. You can't miss it.
